Frequently Asked Questions
A lowboy trailer (also called a double drop) features an extremely low deck height (typically 18-22 inches from the ground) positioned between the gooseneck and rear axles. They’re specifically designed for extremely heavy and tall equipment that exceeds standard height and weight limitations, such as construction equipment, industrial machinery, and oversized components.
Our standard lowboy trailers have a capacity of up to 80,000 pounds, while our specialized heavy-haul lowboys can accommodate loads up to 150,000 pounds. The specific capacity depends on axle configurations, trailer design, and regulatory requirements for your specific route.
Most lowboy shipments require some form of permitting due to height, width, or weight considerations. Our logistics team handles all necessary permits, route surveys, and escort arrangements. We coordinate with state and local authorities to ensure complete compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Lowboy trailers can be loaded via detachable gooseneck (allowing equipment to be driven onto the trailer), using ramps at the rear, via crane, or with specialized loading docks. Our team coordinates the appropriate method based on your equipment specifications and facility capabilities.
Lowboy trailers have a significantly lower deck height (18-22 inches) compared to step decks (36-40 inches), allowing for much taller loads. Lowboys also typically have higher weight capacities and are designed for heavier equipment. Step decks are more versatile for general oversized cargo, while lowboys specialize in extremely heavy and tall loads.
For standard lowboy shipments, we recommend booking 3-5 business days in advance. For oversize/overweight loads requiring extensive permitting or multi-state travel, 7-14 days advance notice is ideal. For urgent situations, we do offer expedited service with our quick-response team to accommodate time-sensitive shipments.
